These are 'small' groups of people from our congregation that get together for pure fellowship and fun. They help people find that informal support system that can become their "church within the church." In the past, these groups were called "doublets" because they started out as couples many years ago. Some have retained that name for their fellowship group. Now, these gatherings are commonly called 'small' group, as they encompass, couples as well as singles, men and women.
When do they meet? Fellowship groups normally meet once a month on a certain evening, or even a Sunday afternoon. Shared meals such as a planned potluck, barbeque, or picnic are popular, with some kind of fun activity usually following. Other activities might include going to a play or baseball game for example.
Who are Fellowship Groups for? Fellowship Groups are for adult couples or singles of various ages. Depending on the group and the activity is whether or not children are invited. The main criteria for membership is a willingness to make the group a priority by attending most of the time. Otherwise, groups tend to fall apart.
Who hosts the groups? Fellowship Groups depend on members taking the initiative in hosting the groups and caring for each others' needs. Most groups have a yearly sign-up in January to set the schedule of hosts and hostesses. As a host, you are responsible for setting the format (where, when, what), inviting your group members, and making sure your plan all comes together. In other words, if you were going to have a potluck at your house, for example, it would be up to the you to let everyone know when it is, where you live, and maybe even telling them what to bring.
PHD's (Post High-School Disciples) This group is specially designed for College Age people who are looking for Christian fellowship, study and activities. Formerly know as the YUMMY group (Younger United Methodists Minus Young-ins) they now have their own Bible Study on Sunday mornings at the church, 10:30 am. They also meet Sunday evenings, generally at the church or in one another's homes and in various locations around the Tri-Cities for their activities. The group spent a week this summer up at Twinlow Church Camp for their first work mission and have another mission trip in the making for next year. Our Youth and Education Directors Cynthia Bement and Brittany Williamson are responsible for creating and facilitating this new group. It is now under it's own leadership but you may call one of them at the church office, 582-2163, ext. 101 or 110 for details. They will get you connected!
If you are interested in joining a 'small group' or fellowship group, please call the church office at 582-2163. We are happy to assist you in finding a gathering for you!
